Transportation

Trains

There are two train stations in Rome: Termini and Tiburtina, both served by high-speed trains. Termini in closer to the city center, while Tiburtina is closer to Luiss campuses. Rome has an integrated public transport network that includes bus, tram and metro service. The price of a single ticket, valid for 100 minutes, is € 1,50. Tickets must be bought before boarding the bus (some buses have a ticket machine on board) and must be validated at the beginning of the journey. Passengers found without a valid ticket will have to pay a fine from € 50 to € 100.

Taxis

Taxi’s inhabit stands throughout central Rome, or can be summoned by calling 06.3570, which has by far the most cars on the streets. You might also try 06.42.57, 06.66 45, 06.55 51 or 06.49 94. You can now order a taxi the night before if you need to have a morning pickup. You’ll get an SMS message on your cell phone ten minutes before the cab is likely to arrive. You will find plenty of taxis at airports and train stations, so you do not need to reserve a taxi in advance for your arrival. It is strongly recommended to specify if you want to pay by credit card, either while reserving the pick-up service or while getting into a taxi. Please note that sometimes unauthorized drivers posing as taxi drivers will stand outside the airports and Termini Railway Station and will likely charge you more money than the regular fare. Licensed taxis are painted white, have “taxi” lights on the roof, and have Comune di Roma decals (with the taxi’s license number) on the doors.

Transportation from Fiumicino Airport

(it is recommended to take the Leonardo Express or taxi):

  • by Train: “Leonardo Express” from Fiumicino (every 15 to 30 minutes) to Termini Railway Station. The cost is approximately € 14,00;
  • by Shuttle Bus: you can find details on www.sitbusshuttle.it;
  • by taxi: from Fiumicino to the city center, the cost of a regular white taxi is approximately € 50,00 (it takes roughly 45 minutes, depending on traffic).

Transportation from Ciampino Airport

(it is recommended to take the Terravision Bus or taxi):

  • Bus ATRAL to Termini Railway Station (for timetable: www.atral.it, it takes 45 min., € 4,50).
  • Bus COTRAL to Termini Railway Station (via Giolitti), it takes 45 min., € 4,50).
  • SIT BUS Shuttle: you may find more info on www.sitbusshuttle.it (it costs € 6,00).
  • Terravision Bus: to Termini Railway Station (via Marsala): you may find more info on: www.terravision.eu/rome_ciampino.html (it costs € 4,00, it takes 40 min.)
  • by taxi: from Ciampino to the city center, the cost of a regular white taxi is approximately
    € 50,00 (it takes roughly 45 minutes, depending on the traffic).

Uber and Lyft

Please note, Uber and Lyft are not well established in Rome, especially due to the wave of
controversy the service has sparked among taxi drivers. Uber drivers have to drive certain cars
and not their own personal vehicles and drivers must own professional licenses who have been
vetted by the company, making it not so different from a taxi service.
